found it in the bargain rack of a smalltown thriftshop for US $1.50.
read label, fell in love.
horribly floppy, huge comedy buttons.
a head-sized gap where the back of the collar should meet the back of the thing.
it fit, i was struck.
bought it, loved it, almost slept in it. so what if it had no signed label? it had a concept! and what it lacked in visible pedigree was made up for in lack of good looks. more importantly, i look horrible in it.
horrible.
did i say i love it? all of a sudden it all makes sense. my life has a meaning now.
boytoy alex knew exactly what i was talking about the moment i talked about it. the verdict? mid-nineties margiela. definitely worth a bundle. googling for 'margiela doll jacket' produced the following:
"(...) a jacket from his 1994 "doll" collection. For this line, the clothes of a pair of Barbie- and Ken-type dolls were blown up to human size, preserving all the distortions of proportion and the shortcuts of doll-tailoring, which resulted in supremely unflattering garments, an ugly fashion in-joke."
googling for 'margiela 1994' produced the following:
" October 1993: Paris. Presentation of S/S 1994 Martin Margiela 'Retrospective' collection
September 1994: Paris, Milan, New York, Tokyo, London, Bonn. Simultaneous presentations of A/W 1994-'95: collection at boutiques in each city replaced March 94, Paris based show. Clothes shown to public when in shops."
google images produced nothing, yet ebay did: another jacket from the same collection for GBP 180.00 (Approximately US $340.31)

Maison Martin Margiela 'reproduction' collection blazer
Made in Italy
A rare and beautiful jacket by Martin Margiela in a very dark charcoal weave from the mainline 'reproduction' collection.
The shape is directly based on a man's jacket from Germany in the 70's. Although designed for women, this piece looks equally sharp on a man.
The jacket features slim severe lapels, a low break with two horn button fastenings, and pick-stitching around the lapels and pockets. There are five black horn buttons at each cuff.
The silhouette is long, slim and elongated and flares very slightly from the hip. The jacket is fully lined in black.
The large white internal label reads: Reproduction of a series of old garments: Tailored jacket for men. Germany, seventies.
A highly collectable and very beautiful piece.
i say mine is beautifuler. plus, i'm sure this guy's not bound to make a 22587.33% profit on his sale.
