The european tour, a report incomplete

greetings from gloomy dooblin, dear reader. land of the €0.80 twenty internet minutes. you better appreciate me spending my cold hard cash on you. so what have i been up to, you ask.

Flew across on my $600 airmadrid ticket. was appalled at the quality of service (or lack thereof). mind you, i love airplane food, but this pasta had been remicrowaved enough times to make it crunchy. and the plane left like an hour late (a friend of my brother who works for the bastards said we were lucky the plane even showed up).

Madrid: arrived in a perpetual drizzle, cold. got lost finding our host's apartment, but when we got there, we were treated to instant soup from an envelope with the nicest croutons i've ever laid tastebuds on. "Picatostes" they're called. the spanish are weird. did el prado and reina sofia in a day, skipping through the filler and salivating over the velasquez and brueghels. guernica was impressive, but the study sketches were much better. i want a horse with a conical tongue for christmas. went out to find myself apalled at the gusto those people put on the crummiest of musics. and they love standing up on stages and dancing the night away. again, weird folk. cooked mojitos for a whole bunch of natives, had a ball, took bus to

Bilbao: got there in siesta time, so the place was deserted. walked the ria to das guggenheim, which was deserted. the bastards didn't count over-25s as students, so had to pay the full fare. walked in the richard serras, was not as impressed as i was with the ones at the dia foundation upstate (you always remember the first time). loooved the jenny holzer rotblau columns. salivated over gerhardt (sp?) richter's atlas for way too long, yawned through the tons and tons of joseph beuys (sp?). bought a black-white sailor t-shirt at H&M, oogled at the workers wearing the Viktor & Rolf promo t-shirts. had tapas and beer for dinner, took bus to santander, took ryanair to

London: which hurts, hurts my pocket. saw linklater's a scanner darkly for like four pounds, enjoyed it thoroughly. slid down the slides at tate modern and skipped around the collection while waiting for my turn. the place was insanely crowded. i don't know if i prefer the packs of schoolchildren on weekdays or the frozen bored masses of the weekends. went on my necessary boardiemeet, added a Ben to my zigger tally. i probably licked his face. i'll have to check the pictures. i'm sorry. got to H&M too late to see all the Viktor & Rolf, or to see the riots, but fell in love a little with the jeans, and with the crummy jpg representation of the tuxedo-frill wifebeater and tightie whities. spent too much time online researching and decided i'd have to wait till i got to the cheaper southern european region to indulge. i'm cheap and on a budget. woke up at three in the morning to catch a couple of night buses to catch the second stansted express to catch my ryanair to

Dublin: which is where i'm now. I promise i'll keep you posted on the latest developments. I'm also sure i've forgotten many a funny anecdote about my previous stations, so expect plenty of backtracking on my next posts.

See you next time!
